Calvin Ku at Children's Hospital of Oakland
Host: Mary Alice Kirincic & Guest Board Member, Paul Kirincic

Essence Story by Mary Alice Kirincic:

There are many kinds of magic and last Monday Paul and I got to see the very
best kind; the kind of magic that happens when curiosity and wonder trump
boredom, discomfort and fear. Calvin Ku brought his brand of special
healing to Children's Hospital of Oakland and not only made balls appear
under tin cups but big smiles appear on little faces as well. He has a very
easy way of making everyone in the room feel comfortable. Parents held
their children on their laps and they really enjoyed the change in mood his
little show brought. It is a rough time in their lives and it was apparent
they welcomed Calvin's show. He is a performer very well suited for this
kind of venue because he is instantly adaptable to change. He adjusted the
show for each bedridden child with ease. It was a wonderful afternoon for
the children and for Paul and I, and I am sure Calvin. He obviously loves
to volunteer and is a Bread and Roses treasure.

"Hope and Healing Through Live Music"

Calvin (MagicKai),
Everyone loved your performance last night at our banquet.  It was just awesome to see your performance in person.  Your connection with the audience was also terrific.  Those who went on stage with you felt “at home” and very comfortable not belittled as done by other performers.  We are still looking for the disappearing and re-appearing egg and wondering how did you get all those bottles out of the air?

I got so much credit for your performance and all I did was arranged for you to perform.  Thank you again for a wonderful show.

Calvin Kai Ku

Calvin Kai Ku is a professional actor, magician, clown, director, and playwright. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a BA in Theatre Arts, where he focused on physical and technical theatre. During his education at UCSC, he performed with Rainbow Theatre, a multicultural theatre directed by Don Williams. He also directed a provocative production Untitled Until, a theatrical experience of poetry, dance, and music that expressed the cast’s stories and their emotional experiences. After studying under Patty Gallagher’s Clown Studio, his interests in clowning led him to the Clown Conservatory of San Francisco directed by Jeff Raz. There, he studied with such artists as David Shiner, John Gilkey, Ronlin Forman, Joan Mankin; and trained in acrobatics with Master Lu Yi, former director of the Nanjing Acrobats.

His love for magic began at an early age. Like all professional magicians, magic was originally a hobby for Kai. It was only until after much guidance from mentor and Misdirections Magic Shop owner Joe Pon that Kai would bring all he knew to the table to enhance his showmanship and perform magic professionally. As a magician and theatre practitioner, he continues to discover how magic and illusions can bring life to all and every kind of performance.

Currently Kai is working on an original clown act that combines both acrobatics and magic.
